What is Spiritual Direction?
Where can I Find a Spiritual Director?
What is the Enneagram?
Spiritual Direction is conversation with a spiritual companion. A Spiritual Director is not a therapist, but a person who listens and may be able to offer observations about your relationship with God, understanding of God, or how the Holy Spirit may be working in your life. St. Ignatius of Loyola understood the role of a spiritual director as one who helps another grow in relationship with God by listening, offering, and then getting out of the way. Mary honors this commitment and is committed to serving others who seek spiritual conversation and guidance.
Offerings:
I invite you to schedule a free 30-minute Zoom call, if you'd like to explore the possibility of meeting with me as your spiritual director.
Discern: During our free 30-minute getting-to-know-you session, I welcome you. I ask what you are looking for in spiritual direction. I talk about what I can offer you in the way of spiritual companionship.
If at some point we decide to meet, I will likely ask if you would like to have a free one-hour enneagram typing session. This helps us get to know each other and develop trust. I do have a fee, which we can discuss at this meeting. I will not and have not turned anyone away for lack of financial means.
One-hour Spiritual Direction session: We might do silence, breathing, prayer as we gather. I usually read a scripture or read from spiritual writing. I ask what you are comfortable with. Following the opening, I ask what you'd like to discuss. I listen attentively and offer statements like, "I noticed that... I appreciate that... I wonder if..." There is no judgement, criticism, or trying to fix you. I typically pray with a blessing for you at then end of the meeting.
My hope is to accompany you with compassionate presence as you seek to uncover those ways in which God may be working in your life. eventually explore Ignatian discernment in your circumstance that you bring.
Meet monthly for one hour with plans to meet for at least a few months. You have freedom. You can let me know at any time if you'd like to discontinue spiritual direction.
The Spiritual Exercises meetings are similar, but focused, more frequent, and do involve committing to a several month time period.
Serving makes us aware of our wholeness and its power. The wholeness in us serves the wholeness in others and the wholeness in life. The wholeness in you is the same as the wholeness in me. Service is a relationship between equals: our service strengthens us as well as others. Fixing and helping are draining, and over time we may burn out, but service is renewing. When we serve, our work itself will renew us. In helping we may find a sense of satisfaction; in serving we find a sense of gratitude. --Rachel Naomi Remen
Spiritual transformation takes place incrementally over time with others in the context of disciplines and practices that open us to God. In general, while we are still on this earth, our transformation will happen by degrees (see II Corinthians 3:18) and we need each other in order to grow. (see I Corinthians 12) - Ruth Haley Barton
Father Timothy Gallagher notes, in The Discernment of Spirits, three types of interior awareness: spiritual, psychological, and moral. He notes that "An expanding psychological self-awareness increases the space for spiritual awareness as well, and all efforts toward deepening our psychological awareness are of great value toward discernment" (p.23). The enneagram of personality types offers psychological growth to enhance spiritual growth.
I serve a variety of people who seek to deepen their relationship with God or their Higher Power. I successfully integrate enneagram knowledge with spiritual direction.
I hold a Masters in Pastoral Studies and a Certificate in Spiritual Direction from Springhill Jesuit College, 2019.
Enneagram Certifications: Enneagram Practitioner (three certifications), Enneagram Coach (two certifications), and Enneagram Typing and Teaching Certification (one certification).
I invite you to a free 30-minute Zoom call, if you'd like to explore the possibility of meeting with me as your spiritual director.
I am trained to integrate spiritual direction and the enneagram.
Enneagram Practitioners / Life Coaches collaborate with you to help you develop self-understanding, gain insight into your habits of responding to the world based on your Enneagram type, and uncover the changes you'd like to see in your life.
Typing & Teaching for Individuals and Groups
I use professional visual materials and questions to share a basic understanding of the enneagram types and to help you narrow your possible types. I use the Narrative Enneagram method for assessing your top 2-3 enneagram types. The interview takes an hour.
I offer a free 30-minute Zoom consultation for inquiries.
Mary's kind, caring, and patient nature made the challenging inner odyssey of The Spiritual Exercises an ultimately uplifting experience. While this journey does ask one to delve into their darker aspects, the light on the other side of this trek is assured and bright, and having Mary join me on that journey was like always having a lantern in the dark, guiding me down the path.
